Following the recent changes in Coronavirus restrictions published on 15th June, the position regarding funerals and wakes is set out below.

 From 21st June 2021:

Funerals can go ahead with restrictions on numbers of attendees – although it is possible for more than 30 people to attend, numbers are still limited by the size of the venue (eg the church or crematorium chapel).

At the funeral service, those living within the same household or support bubble may sit together, but a distance of at least 2 metres must be kept between all other people.

We are advised that the numbers permitted at the Crematoriums are as follows, but please note that these figures may be based on social distancing for individuals rather than household bubbles, so do check with us for further advice and confirmation:

Wealden Crematorium, Horam – 54

Kent & Sussex Crematorium, Tunbridge Wells – 33 (or 12 in the Family Chapel)

Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton – 50

Downs Crematorium, Brighton – 50 (or 8 in the Family Chapel)

Eastbourne Crematorium – 50 seated / 60 seated and standing (or 11 in the Family Chapel)

At the Crematorium, the coffin will generally be carried in before the mourners enter the chapel. It is not permitted for mourners to touch or kiss the coffin, or to place flowers upon it.

Floral tributes delivered to our office in advance will still be allowed, but crematoriums are requesting that these are limited to one or two.

Crematorium can generally offer a webcast of the funeral to allow family and friends to watch the service either live, or at a later time. We will arrange this for you, and advise you of the crematorium fees depending on the options chosen.

There is no longer a maximum number cap for wake attendees, BUT the number will be limited by the venue size and their social distancing requirements.

Restaurants and pubs etc are COVID-secure venues and will be able to advise you of their maximum capacity.

If you are planning a wake which is not in a COVID-secure venue, for example a private garden, you must carry out your own risk assessment.  It is NOT permitted to have a wake within private homes, including enclosed garden marquees, for more than 6 people or 2 households.

Social distancing is still very important. You should stay 2 metres apart from anyone who is not in your household or support bubble where possible, or 1 metre with extra precautions in place (such as wearing face coverings) if you cannot stay 2 metres apart.

You must wear a face covering in many indoor settings, such as places of worship, unless you are exempt or have a reasonable excuse.

If you have any queries do please get in touch and we will be glad to help you.
